GBV &  Norm Implementation

This is a study of states’ responses to gender-based violence. Medie’s book, “Global Norms and Local Action: The Campaigns to End Violence against Women in Africa” examines the factors that shape states’ implementation of international gender-based violence norms in Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire. It draws on over 300 interviews with a range of individuals, including law enforcement officers and survivors of violence, to probe the factors that affect norm implementation at the street-level, with a focus on the roles of international organizations and women’s movements.

Medie’s second book, which is in progress, studies the evolution of women’s traditional leadership in Botswana, Ghana, Liberia, and South Africa. It draws on 700 interviews and an original survey to theorise women traditional leaders’ influence on the implementation of progressive women’s rights norms.
